| Town Hall ToasterScott D. Nelson | Most of us are familiar with the famous quote misattributed to Marie Antoinette, "let them eat cake". These words were supposedly uttered when she learned that her people were starving and had no bread. Probably less familiar, is "let them eat toast". Town Hall Toaster is a short and sweet 3D coffee break game written by game developer, Scott D. Nelson. If you hadn't guessed by the title, Town Hall has been converted into a giant toaster in order to help feed the hungry taxpayers and you, the player, must take control.
The mechanics of the game are simple enough to grasp. There are four revolving plates located in the centre of the screen and you must attempt to land your slices of toast on them in order to obtain cash. Longer cooking periods result in more cash being earned, but overdoing it will decrease the value of said toast. Each level increases the speed of the revolving plates and raises the cash target up another $1,000. Wasting your entire supply of toast or failing to meet the cash goal results in defeat.
I'm afraid there isn't much more diversity to this game. Town Hall Toaster is decidedly short with only four levels to play through. However, I can't possibly imagine how the game could actually be made to stretch beyond these four levels without introducing more features or intrigue to the gameplay. The graphics could have been more alluring too, as they are composed mostly of the basic geometrical shapes and lack sufficient detail. While I did enjoy the bright and bouncy background music, I was dismayed by the lack of similarly cheery sound effects to compliment it.
In short: Simple, but severely lacking in the style department. If you are looking for a short game to only occupy five to ten minutes of your time, it will do. But there are far more coffee break games out there that can do the same job with a little more flair.
