Tank Commander

Tank Commander is a very simplistic arcade-shooter with a few rough edges that still manages to maintain playability. Command a tank (haha, see what I did there?) and make your way through a seemingly endless level, blasting everything you see with your choice of cannon-fire or rockets.

I'm not too sure if you can "win" the game, but what I am sure of is that you won't. Tank Commander's help file boasts that it is not designed to let you win, and trust me, you'll die quicker than it took you to read up to this point in the review.

Your tank controls rather easily with either the WASD or Arrow keys, you aim with the mouse and click to fire. It all seems intuitive until you get to the rockets which require you to hold down Space when you click. This definitely threw me off as it required more thought processing than I would have preferred, making both my aiming and my driving erratic.

The gameplay features have their ups and downs. You move right-to-left to progress through the level, but moving too far up or down sends you to the opposite side of the screen (kind of like PacMan). This is a neat little trick, considering the game was made with the free version of GameMaker, however, whatever novelty that provides will be overshadowed by the fact that you can't run over infantry, a game-breaking feature.

Tank Commander's graphics are as far away from impressive as they can get, but they get the job done. Also, the sounds can get a little annoying after a while and music is non-existent.

I can't say Tank Commander is "bad" because it is certainly playable. The graphics may throw some of you off and the difficulty will certainly throw a lot of you off, but overall, there's a good chance it may steal one of your coffee breaks.
