I hope at least one of you gets that reference...
Microbes is a very simple, yet intensely satisfying arcade shooter based off of the Amiga game of the same name. The object of the game is simple: move along the rim of a brightly colored petri dish while shooting at the various multiplying "germs" within.
Sounds easy, right? As in all arcade games, the longer you survive the harder it gets, and pretty soon you'll find yourself frantically racing around the edge of the dish in an effort to contain the ever-quickening growth of the T-Virus bacteria. Have I overused the strikethrough tag, yet?
The controls for Microbes are very intuitive. Simply moving the mouse left and right moves you around the circular arena clockwise and counterclockwise, respectively. The left mouse button shoots your basic penicillin laser things and the right mouse button activates Bullet Time which slows everything down a short while so you can unleash a barrage of bullets that slam into the germs upon returning to normal speed. Trust me, it both looks and feels satisfying when you perform it correctly, but be careful, you're limited as to how long you can remain in Bullet Time.
Microbes' graphics are excellent. Everything looks very clean, crisp, and futuristic and the particle effects don't clutter the playing field. The sound effects are decent but the music doesn't quite match the quality of the rest of the game, though that is a very minor issue.
Microbes also features an online high score list. At the time of writing, I'm currently number seven with 18,659. Can you beat my score?
Overall, Microbes is a perfect coffee break arcade shooter that offers simplistic, yet addictive gameplay that is sure to eat up quite a bit of your time. |
