| Click Copterknpmaster | I received a review request for Super Bubble Blob today and upon downloading, my computer erupted into a chaotic frenzy of alarms combined with a voice saying "Warning, a Virus has been detected". Though I'm skeptical as to whether a virus was actually detected, I decided to save my visitors the risk and try out another game made by the same author.
Alas, we have Click Copter, a retro styled side-scrolling arcade shooter by knpmaster with a bunch of different weapons and some pretty nice pixel art.
When you first start Click Copter you'll be greeted with some scrolling text explaining the story. Apparently, far in the future some evil overlord has invaded your peaceful planet and the only hope for survival lies in the "master defense weapon", CC-150.
The core of the gameplay involves maneuvering the CC-150 around various obstacles while shooting bad guys and bosses along the way. It sounds pretty straightforward, but things are made difficult when you realize that gravity will constantly pull the CC-150 towards the ground.
The controls are simple, WASD/Arrows move the CC-150 around while the mouse aims and left click shoots.
Where Click Copter really shines is in its weapon variety. You'll be blasting away enemies with weapons ranging from machine guns to lightsabers to missiles. Each weapon is balanced out with the others so picking up the machine gun doesn't make you invincible, trust me.
Another excellent feature of Click Copter is its randomly generated levels. This provides endless replay value and allows novice players who have trouble progressing to still enjoy "new" levels each time they die... like me.
Graphically, Click Copter will satisfy any retro gamer's appetite for simple but pleasant pixel art. Musically, Click Copter employs MIDI sounds with a distinct Chiptune feel that makes it sound very similar to Mega Man.
One of my gripes with Click Copter is its physics when it comes to movement. Constantly fighting gravity with the CC-150 while avoiding obstacles while aiming while trying to reach bonuses can bog you down very quickly to the point where trying to last more than a few minutes becomes a joke. I'm sure hardcore arcade gamers won't mind, but I found it very difficult.
My only other gripe is Click Copter's small screen while in windowed mode. I often found myself clicking off the window and onto my desktop which became very frustrating, knowing that gravity will pull my copter down very quickly if I don't maintain upward thrust. A stroke of the F5 key will switch to full screen, but why even include a windowed mode if it's going to be so small?
Overall, Click Copter is a very good retro arcade shooter with some excellent weapon variety and endless replay value. Fans of Arcade and Retro games should definitely give Click Copter a try. |
